Another biography of Hitler? It was a question Ian Kershaw had to contend with throughout the 1990s as he struggled to ascend his chosen mountain top. Many others had scaled the heights before him, notably Alan Bullock and Joachim Fest, and many others had failed to reach the summit. Kershaw completed his 2000-page, two-volume biography last year to enormous critical acclaim, and there can be little doubt that his is the flag that will flutter triumphantly for the next generation or more. But what’s so special about Kershaw’s Hitler – and why, indeed, another biography?
