Julia Lovell is the author of The Opium War: Drugs, Dreams and the Making of China, and in the June issue of History Today she writes about  how increasing access foreigners have to Chinese historical archives is allowing a broader, less western-biased understanding of the conflict.

In this short interview, Julia discusses the legacy of the Opium Wars, and how they have been viewed differently by the Chinese and the British, with History Today editor Paul Lay.
