With their differing approaches Weizmann and Ben-Gurion were the founding fathers of the state of Israel. Inspired by Herzl they laboured to give Zionism unity, force, world respect and, ultimately, a homeland.
The transformation of Zionism from a vague cultural-religious instinct of ancient root into a modern movement culminating in a new nation-state has at last laid the curse of collective Jewish homelessness. But it has also burdened our times with a problem that refuses to be localised within the boundaries of the Middle East.
